I personally love coconut oil, and I use it daily on my skin. For skin health, I mix a few drops of essential oil such as carrot or lavender and smooth over my skin prior to putting on makeup. The oil soaks in quickly and does wonders for the skin, and the essential oils add their own healthy boost. Beyond skin care, coconut oil is an excellent oil to use in cooking, on skin, and on your hair. When eaten in substantial amounts, coconut oil acts like a health tonic, according to “Bruce Fife, C.N., N.D., who is an author, speaker, and certified nutritionist and naturopathic physician. Fife states that coconut oil helps by “improving the absorption of vitamins and minerals in the foods that are consumed at the same time the oil is used. Included in this group are fat-soluble nutrients such as vitamins A, D, E and K, beta-carotene and CoQ10”.
Coconut oil is a great hair strengthener because it helps build the shaft of each hair.
I like to rub a very tiny amount in my hand and then smooth that over my hair when it feels a tad dry. This bit of oil does not make my hair greasy, but it does make it softer and more manageable and the split ends all but disappear. You can also put coconut oil on your scalp to help control dandruff by killing the fungus that causes this condition. Rub a small amount of coconut oil into the scalp and hair and leave on for an hour or so. Then take a soft cloth and wipe out the excess prior to washing your hair to prevent the tub from getting greasy. Wash your hair with shampoo and rinse thoroughly. Your hair will be lustrous and shiny after this treatment, and your scalp will be squeaky clean.
Fife and others suggest that coconut oil “creates a protective chemical barrier that helps shield the body from harmful germs. It contains a special group of germ-fighting fatty acids with antifungal properties that help kill bacteria, viruses and fungi that can cause disease and skin infections such as ringworm, jock itch, toenail fungus and common acne”.
For years Asian people have used coconut oil as medicine for burns, cuts, and other injuries, and millions in the United States have caught on to this miraculous little oil. Since coconut oil provides some protection from UV rays, it is a good idea to use it even if you follow up with a sunscreen, since the oil itself may provide some extra protection, and you are nourishing your skin with this amazing oil as you have fun in the sun.
I highly recommend you reading Bruce Fife’s book The Coconut Oil Miracle and Coconut Cures: Preventing and Treating Common Health Problems with Coconut. He explains all the benefits of coconut oil, and you can learn why coconut oil’s lauric acid is good for you, and you will learn much more. I found this book life changing, and you may as well.
